Real Madrid edged past Bayern Munich 3-2 on aggregate to reach the Champions League final, surviving a second-half onslaught at the Santiago Bernabeu to hold on to a slender lead from the first leg.

Bayern dominated long spells of the second half and pulled level on the night, but Madrid’s experience in big European nights shone through as they managed the closing stages to advance.

“It was a battle of nerves as much as football,” said Madrid’s manager afterwards. “These players have been here before, and that experience matters.”

Real Madrid now await the winner of the other semi-final, with the final set to be played in three weeks’ time.
